Article Abstract
There are many factors that go into the design and construction of a new emission control system for foundries, which when overlooked will result in an underperforming collection system. In this article, each of the factors that can cause underperformance are addressed individually, starting from the beginning of the process (identifying the types of emissions being collected), to the final considerations (fan selection and placement within the system).
This article covers the following topics:
- Hood design and the three methods used to understand and estimate the necessary requirements of the emission collection (engineering “observable” estimations, mathematic “theoretical” estimations, and computational fluid dynamic modeling to simulate real world conditions)
- Side draft hoods vs canopy style hood design and volumetric flow rate requirements
- Ductwork and the importance of reducing drop out and pressure loss through restricted air flow
- Control equipment design and selecting the correct product for your business needs (considering factors such as operating temperatures, expected inlet concentrations, volumetric flow rate and expected removal efficiencies)
- Fan design, fan styles, fan placement within the system, and variables to be accommodated for in 24/7/365 operating conditions

Brian has over 30 years of experience in environmental engineering. His focus over the last 20 years has been in the metals industry, particularly in the steel sector. Brian has utilized computational fluid dynamic modeling (CFD) to “right size” new emission control systems/equipment and troubleshoot existing systems to improve their efficiencies.
